Autograph letter signed : Downing Street [London], to an unidentified recipient, 1797 Jan. 12.

Explaining that the recipient's letter of the 4th did not reach him until yesterday, the 11th; expressing his pleasure at "the account of the measures that have been taken at Bath"; noting that the "Bath address will be inserted in the Gazette of Saturday"; saying that he hopes that other parts of the country will follow the example set by Bath.

Gordon N. Ray, a graduate of Indiana University, was closely associated with the life and work of William Makepeace Thackeray. His four volume edition of the Letters and private papers appeared in 1945-1946 and his two volume biography in 1954-1955. From 1963 to 1985 Ray was president of the John Simon Guggenheim Foundation.
